What is Urinary Incontinence?
Urinary Incontinence is the uncontrolled slow leaking of urine from the bladder. Incontinence affects about 30 percent of the adults and for many people, it is an embarrassing experience to deal with. Research shows that pregnant woman are most likely to experience incontinence as the number of children increases, this includes both vaginal and caesarian section. Women experiencing menopause are also likely to experience higher rates of incontinence as their estrogen levels decrease. What are the types of Urinary incontinence?
There are three main types of urinary incontinence: stress, urge and mixed urinary incontinence. Some people may also develop neurogenic bladder from diseases like diabetes or trauma which can cause nerve damage and decrease bladder sensation, which can cause an overflow of the bladder and lead to urinary incontinence
How do you treat or manage Urinary Incontinence?
Before managing urinary incontinence, urinary tract infection (UTI) should be evaluated and treated first. Do a urine analysis to rule out urinary tract infection. If UTI is identified, treat with antibiotics. Evaluate for urge incontinence which is treated medically, stress urinary incontinence which is treated with pessaries or surgically and mixed incontinence, treated medically and surgically.
