What is a hysterectomy?
Removal of the uterus via an incision in the abdomen or through the vagina. The abdominal incision can be horizontal or vertical. In the case of laparoscopy, multiple small incisions are made on the abdomen.
What are the risks of Hysterectomy?
The risk of the surgery includes the risk of infections, excess bleeding which may require blood transfusions, injury to the bowel, bladder, ureter, blood vessels and other internal structures, scar tissue, blood clots, and in rare cases death with infections of the incision being most common.
What are the long-term effects of a Hysterectomy?
Scar tissue formation, and sometimes chronic pain.
Do you lose weight after a hysterectomy?
No, not unless the uterus is massively enlarged from fibroids.
